The Regina Thunder

The Regina Thunder celebrated several firsts in 2013, capturing the Prairie Football Conference title and going on to win the Canadian championship.
Regina won the PFC title by defeating the host Saskatoon Hilltops 21-16. The Hilltops were the three-time defending national championships.
Before a home crowd at historic Mosaic Stadium, the Thunder — under first-year head coach Scott MacAulay — defeated the Vancouver Island Raiders 55-26 in the 2013 Canadian Bowl.
The Thunder swept the titles to commemorate its 14th season as a junior football franchise.
Asher Hastings was named the national final’s offensive MVP after throwing five touchdown passes, two of which were caught by Mitch Thompson as part of his nine-catch, 189-yard performance.
Linebacker Brett Selinger was named the defensive MVP after figuring in nine tackles.
The Thunder’s Nick Brown rushed 20 times for 203 yards, 48 of which came on a TD run.

DeWitt Twins

  • Learned to skate on Wascana Lake at age five.
  • Became sought-after performers at ice shows throughout Western Canada and in 1951 served as professional instructors for skating clubs in Moose Jaw and Swift Current.
  • Wascana Winter Club women’s pair champions from 1943-48 and Western Canadian women’s pairs champions 1947-49.
  • Turned professional and performed in skating shows starring two former Olympic champions, Canada’s Barbara Ann Scott and Norway’s Sonja Henie, for extensive tours throughout United States, Canada and Cuba.

  • Manager Barry Richardson, coaches Chris Duda and Mervin Barth chose the 12-player squad of 11- and 12-year-olds.
  • Team advanced through provincial, regional and national championships, winning 17 of its 18 games.
  • Became the first Saskatchewan team to earn a berth in the Little League World Series since its inception in 1947.
  • In Williamsport, Pennsylvania, played teams from Saudi Arabia, Guam and Venezuela.

Kyle George Rink 2005

  • Won 2005 provincial junior men’s curling championship
  • Became first Saskatchewan rink to win the Canadian and world junior men’s crowns
  • Won eight-team provincial championship in Whitewood
  • Posted 8-2 record in round robin of Canadian championship in Fredericton to earn bye into the final and beat Ontario’s Mark Bice rink 8-5 in final
  • At world’s in Pinerolo, Italy, placed fourth in round-robin at 6-3, beat Scotland 6-2 in semi-final and Sweden’s Nils Carlsen 6-5 in an extra-end final
  • SaskSport Team of the Year in 2005
  • Named to Saskatchewan Curling Association Legends of Curling Honour Roll

Girls Midget Softball Team 1990

  • Panthers are the 1st Saskatchewan female team to win a national softball championship
  • 1989 and 1990, despite being midget-aged (18 & under) they played in the senior Regina Ladies Softball League A division
  • Winning back-to-back provincial midget championships earned them a berth in the 1990 Canadian championship in Edmonton
  • Panthers lost their first four round-robin games before rebounding with three victories to finish in a 3-way tie for fourth. Playing back-to-back tiebreakers they fought to the gold medal match where they took home a 7-0 mercy-rule victory over B.C.

Men’s Wrestling Team 1996-97

  • 1997 Cougars won the University of Regina’s first national championship
  • Cougars were 8-0 in dual meets and ranked 7th in Canada entering Canada West/GPAC championship at University of Saskatchewan, before defeating top-rated Calgary to win conference title (Six wrestlers won medals and the school won 34 out of the 40 matches)
  • At CIAU championship at McMaster in Hamilton, Cougar wrestlers set a CIAU record with 72 points as all 10 wrestlers contributed points
  • Six Cougars advanced to gold medal matches and one to a third place match, but losses by Lease Bertram, Sean Thompson and Scott Schmidt left the championship in doubt until the final heavyweight bout between Regina’s Dean Schmeichel won 10-0 in 1 :52
  • University of Regina Cougars were one of three finalists for Sask Sport’s Team-of-the-Year, 1997
