The Regina Sports Hall of Fame was established in June of 2002 to “recognize and honour the achievement of individuals, patrons, builders and teams and preserve that which is significant to sport in Regina,” The first class was enshrined in October of 2003.
The concept and development of the Regina Sports Hall of Fame came to be thanks to the hard work of the initial Board of Directors that consisted of: George Watson President, Marlene Hoffman Vice President, Cathie Kryzanowski Secretary, Bill Edwards Treasurer, Norbert Thurmeirer, Dick White, Rod Schmidt, Val Sluth, Ann Clark and Debbie Ward. The efforts of the Board were strongly supported by the City of Regina and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
The vision, that remains consistent to this day, was to create an opportunity to honour excellence in sport in Regina whether the professional, provincial, national and international level or most importantly those grassroots teams, athletes and builders who provide the foundation for our rich sport history in Regina.
The original Hall was housed at the University of Regina, Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport. The Hall later moved to its current home in the Cooperators Centre, Regina Exhibition Association Limited.
The Regina Sports Hall of Fame includes 128 Honorary inductees, athletes, builders and teams from Regina who have been inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame prior to the establishment of the Regina Hall in 2002. Each year the Regina Sports Hall of Fame inducts 6 athletes, builders, patrons or teams at a ceremony each Fall. To be eligible for nomination the nominee must have represented and/or served their sport with distinction in athletic competition and have substantial connections to Regina.
The public is invited to participate by nominating athletes, builders, patrons or teams. The nominations are reviewed by an Induction Committee with final approval from the Board of Directors.
