Wickenheiser Doug

by

  • Played hockey in Regina’s minor programs from age eight, through to Regina Pats of the Western Canada Hockey League. Won 1980 scoring title, helping the Pats advance to Memorial Cup.
  • Selected as outstanding player in Canadian junior hockey and was first overall draft choice of NHL’s Montreal Canadiens.
  • Between 1980-90 played 556 regular-season NHL games.
  • Also played in minor leagues and in Europe.
  • Pats retired his jersey (12), WHL annually recognizes a player for community contributions with Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy and Regina named an arena in his honour.

Kelln (Silzer) Elaine

by

  • Pitcher on Luther College city champions 194 7-49.
  • MVP for Legion of the Girls Intercity Softball League after winning 11 games in 1950-including a 27-batter, no-hitter.
  • Recruited by Parichy Bloomer Girls of the National Girls Baseball League in 1951.
  • Knee surgery ended her pro career.
  • As Western Canadian champion, Legion qualified for the 1953 world women’s softball championship in Toronto, where she faced 30 batters while throwing a no-hitter.
  • Coached Teenettes in 1972, Co-Operators of the Rambler Park Men’s Softball League in 1978-79 and SGI to a women’s city title in 1981.

Elliot (Esson) Margaret

by

  • Born in Rosetown, won Ladies’ Golf tournaments in Kindersley, Rosetown and Outlook in 1935 at age 14.
  • At age 15 won 1936 provincial championship at the Wascana Country Club.
  • Runner-up in 1937; won again in 1938 and 1941.
  • In 1938, she was conferred a Life Membership at the Prince Albert Municipal course.
  • To this date, she is the youngest woman to win a Canadian Provincial Title.
  • While provincial championships were suspended during the war, she was six-time Lobstick winner at Waskesiu between 1938-47.
  • At 16, the youngest player at 1937 National in Winnipeg, reaching the quarterfinals.
  • In 1938, reached the quarterfinals at the National in Ottawa.
  • Won 1947 Saskatoon City championship and 1973 Regina City championship.
  • Wascana Country Club champion nine times from 1958-76.
  • Sponsors the Regina City Ladies’ Golf Championship.

Chiga George

by

  • Born in Regina, played softball in Whitewood
  • Member of the YMCA and Regina Wrestling Club in mid-1930’s under supervision of Jim Trifunov
  • Played for the home-town Regina Roughriders Football Club as right guard from 1934-36
  • -Won heavyweight championship at 1936 Canadian Olympic wrestling trials, repeating in 1937
  • Represented Canada at Berlin Olympics in 1936, where he was recruited to wrestle for Oklahoma State University
  • While on wrestling team from 1937-40, the team was never beaten in inter-university wrestling tournaments
  • Ultimately earned honours degrees and placed second in U.S. wrestling championships
  • Served in Second World War, practiced law and became a judge before earning laurels for improving breeding of beef cattle
  • Served as governor of National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Oklahoma

Peterson Kit

by

  • Began playing handball at University of Winnipeg in 1969
  • Won Molson’s tournament in 1970 and Niagara Falls Open in 1971
  • Moved to Regina in 1974 and played competitively until 1992
  • During nine-year retirement taught junior and women’s handball classes
  • Placed first or second in over 300 tournaments
  • Winner of 18 Saskatchewan Closed singles titles and 20 Saskatchewan Closed doubles titles throughout the 1970’s, ‘S0’s and ’90’s
  • Won 10 Saskatchewan Open doubles up to 2006
  • Canadian over-3S singles champion in 1991, over-40 singles champion in 1992 and over-SO finalist in 2004
  • Placed third with Merv Deckert in over-SO doubles at 2003 world championships in Dublin, Ireland
