Played hockey in Regina’s minor programs from age eight, through to Regina Pats of the Western Canada Hockey League. Won 1980 scoring title, helping the Pats advance to Memorial Cup.
Selected as outstanding player in Canadian junior hockey and was first overall draft choice of NHL’s Montreal Canadiens.
Between 1980-90 played 556 regular-season NHL games.
Also played in minor leagues and in Europe.
Pats retired his jersey (12), WHL annually recognizes a player for community contributions with Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy and Regina named an arena in his honour.
