1997 Cougars won the University of Regina’s first national championship
Cougars were 8-0 in dual meets and ranked 7th in Canada entering Canada West/GPAC championship at University of Saskatchewan, before defeating top-rated Calgary to win conference title (Six wrestlers won medals and the school won 34 out of the 40 matches)
At CIAU championship at McMaster in Hamilton, Cougar wrestlers set a CIAU record with 72 points as all 10 wrestlers contributed points
Six Cougars advanced to gold medal matches and one to a third place match, but losses by Lease Bertram, Sean Thompson and Scott Schmidt left the championship in doubt until the final heavyweight bout between Regina’s Dean Schmeichel won 10-0 in 1 :52
University of Regina Cougars were one of three finalists for Sask Sport’s Team-of-the-Year, 1997
